Let’s Make Moore (County) Moves.
After earning my Bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston’s Department of Theatre and Dance, I relocated to Chicago in 2017 to join the company at Joel Hall Dancers & Center.
Joel’s “Urban Jazz Method” is a living conduit of Black culture; my studies at the Center, in addition to technique training, gave me a practical lens to see why and how of the performing arts functioned as a craft as well as a community institution.
As a cisgendered white female dance artist, my life in Chicago required building an understanding of how Black, Latin, Asian and Indigenous culture were positioned in American dance history.
Attempting to understand the industry and develop a global view of dance, I began a career in ticketing, events and fundraising.
As Special Events Coordinator for Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the Summer 2022 season taught me to ask why concert dance performance exists, why the stories being told onstage matter and why artists and arts industry workers need to keep demanding more from themselves and each other.
Subsequently, my time as Donor Relations Manager for American Ballet Theatre (and the demands of a vibrant NYC social calendar) drove me out of what started to feel like “big dance.”
Attempting to reconnect to what dance meant to me (community, a practice of showing up, the celebration of diversity and shared joy), I started avec Productions, Inc. a few months before moving out of my little one-bedroom in Brooklyn.
Now I’m rekindling this company from the ground up in my hometown.
The Sandhills (land of the longleaf pine forest) - abundantly biodiverse after generations of land stewardship by indigenous brilliance - is thriving.
The events I host in Aberdeen and Southern Pines help me maintain a practice of investing in the rich, resilient landscape surrounding me.
I believe we can tend to this land and this community best by working with one another. avec’s programming is designed to build the infrastructure for strong community connections to sustain and prosper.
Our vision is to offer an encouraging environment of mutual aid resource sharing, opportunities for budding small businesses and independent creative thinkers to work together and a more tolerant, collaborative Moore County community.
Thank you for coming along this journey with us. We can’t wait to dance with you.
